Discussion Starter · #1 · May 28, 2014. Hi! I have a 1998 custom 1200 Sporster that all of a sudden won't start. It ran the other day, but had to jump it after sitting for an hour and now it's dead. When I go out and try to start it, I get nothing - no clicking or anything. The battery is brand new There are 7 complaints filed for the 1998 HARLEY DAVIDSON SPORTSTER. Once I finally get it running I start to ride and it dies, or lasts about about a minute but I can barely make it to 2nd gear. It backfires really hard also Harley, with a lousy regulator, causes an issue with the instrument cluster as well. When the regulator fails, it cannot provide power to the cluster. You might be able to start the engine and ride the bike without much trouble, but there will be no information on the cluster. Riding a bike with a malfunctioning speedometer is pretty unsafe
